silence is golden

Being new had many good things about it. It was a fresh, clean slate and open to new possibilities, but yet at the same time if was often overthrown by the terrible things. Like now, the small girl stood in the middle of the cafeteria with a plate full of food that resembled much of slop. After taking a sweeping view of the lunchroom campus, she felt tiny and alone. Being the lowerclasman was hard enough, but now she was making the journey alone and it was scary.
With a slightly shaking hand she made her way to an empty table at the far end of the lunchroom and far away from everyone else. She wanted to blind in, but being the new kid it was hard to escape the beady eyes of those around her. A blush, rivaling those her mother was known for, dances its way onto her face and the black haired girl slumped down into her chair. Oh why wasn't her power invisibility? Or better, why did she have to be thrown here of all places?
Not that here was bad, but whenever her mother seemed to mention the school her eyes became wide and she was shaken up. Because of this Noa didn't speak if it much, but she did know that Teegan said she had a close friend who worked here and their children attended school here too. But her mother would stop there and so Noa had no clue what these children looked like or even their names, but she did hope that possibly she could find these people, even if she didn't talk to them much, company would be nice.

Jayden sat alone at a lunch table, stabbing at a disgusting plate of what was called 'spagetti' (though it looked more like vomit and noodles) and looking around with a bored expression. Jace was no where to be seen, and without any other close friends, he figured he'd just sit it out. Nonetheless, beside him sat a single, empty book. His notebook he used for 'communicating' was so far useless, considering he had been unable to strike up a conversation with anyone. How pathetic. He knew his brother had tons of friends by now, and here Jayden was, sitting at an empty lunch table in silence, eating something compared to throw up.

Great. Just great.

Then he saw her. She had caught his attention because he knew she was new here; despite his pathetically small list of friends, he had been observant in his time at Beata, and grew to recognize most of the faces around him. But she wasn't familiar. Still, he merely watched her as she walked by, not bothering to attempt to go and talk to her. Because, well, that was embarrassing. And impossible.

Yummy. School food. Just as delicious looking as it was in his old school With a loud sigh, Richard held onto his tray although the food made him nauseous. Well, was it even food? He highly doubted it. After he exited the line, he finally took a step into the cafeteria only to find it pretty full other than a couple of tables... which already had at least one person sitting at them. He looked doubtfully at the tables considering he didn't know anyone here, but that wasn't too much a problem usually, but he didn't know how to act at this school. When everyone had powers, he didn't want to get on anyone's bad side, although as long as the power was physical, it wasn't that big of a deal. "Well, if I have to be here, I guess I'll make the best of it." He then slowly made his way around the large cafeteria until he came across one table with another boy sitting at it. He seemed rather lonely, which is exactly how Richard felt at the moment. Besides, the only other table that seemed at least slightly vacant was another with a girl sitting by herself. The only reason he wasn't going to her was that he didn't think he was that great with girls. He'd only make his situation worse until he got more comfortable around here. So, he took a seat across from Jayden with a small smile on his face. "Hey there," he said.

Feeling another pair of eyes on her, Noa turned her head slightly to the left to see a boy around her age looking at her. As their eyes met, she felt her cheeks heat up and she forced her gaze away. Only, it got worse. Without realizing it, the bottom half of her hair started to turn blonde in an ombré effect. With eyes as wide as saucers, Noa tried to shake the color away, but it stayed. A slight panic-striken look crossed her face, she could hear those around her start to whisper about her change in hair color; but she remained quiet with nothing to do except wish she was anywhere but here. And yet, little did she know that was the exact person she had wished for a mater of minutes ago. Maybe if she knew, she wouldn't feel as embaressed, but she didn't and suddenly the other boy had someone else there and she was still alone. Noa picked up her spoon and picked up a small green pea, putting it in her mouth and chewing it quietly. It was the thug life, not that Noa wanted to eat peas alone but you can't change what you were gifted with.

Jayden looked up from his pile of mush, thankful for the distraction. And the chance to try out his notebook. Taking a cookie into his hand- probably the only edible thing on the plate- he grabbed a pen as begin to write in neat, quick print. "Hello. I'm Jayden. He thought about letting the kid know about him, but decided against it. After all, figuring out Jayden couldn't talk wasn't like figuring out the end of pi, or something. Looking up, he met the girl's eye. And watched her hair change from black to blonde slowly. Crimson eyes widened in surprise for a moment, before he tried to act nonchalant. He hated when people stared at him, so the blonde boy looked away. Though he couldn't help from sneaking the occasional glance her way.

Okay, wait. A notepad? That was odd, yet Richard didn't decide to question it just yet. He just met the guy. Maybe there was a reason behind it, or... maybe he just didn't feel like talking. Either way would be a little weird, but he simply shrugged and tried to introduce himself. "I'm Richard. Or Rick. Or Ricky. Or just... whatever you want to call me," He responded as he continued to stare at the notepad before looking up at Jayden. This guy was already quite curious, and if he constantly talked with that pad of his, it was going to take Richard some getting used to. It wasn't every day that he met someone like that. But then, his attention was turned to the girl sitting by herself at a table when Jayden's eyes shifted in that direction. He turned and studied her for a moment, turning just in time to see her with the blond in her hair hidden so he had no idea why she was beginning to act so nervous or embarrassed. He had unintentionally tilted his head more to one side as he tried to make sense of the situation, but finally he let out a deep breath and turned back to Jayden. "Hey, you want to invite her over here? Can't hurt, can it?" He asked straightforwardly for multiple reasons, one of them being the fact that he couldn't help but notice Jayden continued to glance her way.

Noa knew they were staring, well not the two boys in paticular, but the whole cafeteria in general. Honestly, Noa hated it. The only thing the girl wanted was to fit in and judging by the curious eyes, that wouldn't be today. Not that she blamed those for being curious, seeing as she was a curious nature herself, but it got old after a while. She could hear those whispers people said about her hair, the scoff they made when her power acted without her conscent, the smallest nasty comment. Everything, and it hurt. Especially when she had never been the new kid before, she had grown up with the same group of kids her whole life up until now. Unlike here, those kids knew she was quiet and knew her hair was super long. They knew that she was weird and they knew she blushed so easily. Noa wasn't afraid to be herself there, but here...
Looking up, she noticed the two boys glancing at her between bites. She felt her cheeks heat up and moved her eyes back down the green pile of peas. Look away, please- please look away. It was one thing for people to stare at her... but cute boys? It made her feel nauxious and made Noa greatful for being seated.

Jayden smiled at the young man, waving slightly. 'Rick's easier to write.. I don't talk much. I'm mute since birth.' He explained simply, answering any question the boy more than likely had. It was something everyone wanted to know when they met him, since it was probably the biggest part of who he was. He would've also explained why- if he only knew.
Looking back at Rick, Jaii nodded slightly. Unable to call out to the girl, Jayden thought quickly before grabbing his pen and writing in large, neat letters that took up the rest of the page, Sit with us? He felt incredibly stupid as he held up the notebook, and his cheeks turned a light pink as he looked at the girl with a deeper blush than him.

Actually, Jayden had answered his question, although he wasn't too worried about why he was writing on the pad. It was just one of those things. But Richard did have a feeling of accomplishment when he was able to find out the 'why' behind Jayden writing everything down, and in some ways, he began to feel a little bit of pity but he didn't show it. Because why would he need to feel pity for a guy who has been mute his whole life? He doesn't know any different so it isn't like he had some tragic incident to lose his voice or anything. This was how his life was, and that was that. It was only until he saw Jayden holding up the sign to Noa did Richard snap out of his slight daze before he glanced at the girl at the other table. It was pretty obvious she was rather uncomfortable, and it didn't seem like she was going to glance this way any time soon, so to help him out a little, Richard tried getting her attention so that she could read what Jayden had written. "Hey! You over there!" he shouted, not really thinking about how many people would look at him practically screaming across the room just to get one person's attention. He was simply focused on getting the girl's attention and hoping he could get her to read the sign. Otherwise, there'd be no point in either of them really trying...

Swirling her silver spoon in a substance she assumed was pudding- or mashed potatoes, she was never really sure- she felt her mind thinking about the future. What if she never made any friends and was forced to sit alone every lunch. Her power could happen and Noa would have no one to find comfort in. Yet, it was the boy shouting that made her head snap up and unfortunately her wrist to. She winced as she felt a little bit of the substance hit her cheek, but quickly warming up at the slight touch of the heat on her cheeks. Wiping the food off her face, she read the notebook and felt her eyes widen. Her? Making sure they were talk- writing about her, she pointed at herself with her squatty, toe thumbs. Figuring they were she gathered her stuff and moved it over to their table sheepishly. " Hi." her voice was quiet and appeared calm, but laced with an ever so visible curtain of uncomfortable nerves.

Jayden nodded at her uncertain gesture, smiling lightly in amusement. As she made her way over, Jayden appeared completely calm. At times, he could be shy and reserved, but at the moment, he was completely fine with striking up a conversation. Although, the writing part put a damper on things. He waved her a 'hello,' though didn't do much else as he looked over at Rick. Thinking quickly, he slid the notebook over to the girl, with the earlier sentences still on the page. It was sort of his way of introducing himself, however strange it was.

Richard watched as the girl gathered her things and carefully made her way to the table. So she was a very shy person. It wasn't a bad thing, and it was one feature he actually liked in some girls, but he just found it amusing in Noa. He was just about to say something to her before Jayden quickly slid the paper towards her to let her read it. He stopped for a moment as he studied her face and watched her read it before giving her a smile and introducing himself. "Hey there. I'm Richard... or Rick. Whatever you want to call me. You just seemed lonely so we thought you could join us." he told her happily, being sincere in his words.

Adjusting to the new seat, Noa's eyes fluttered over to the notepad that had been slid over to her. She adjusted her eyes to keep her surprise from being too noticeable, but she felt her cheeks heat up quickly. Mute... since birth? She couldn't imagine it, but reminding herself she was a quiet person, she figured it couldn't be so bad. Turning her attention to the boy now speaking, she widened her eyes slightly. Nodding, she accepted his greeting but felt her insides warm and churn like butter. They had known she had been sitting alone, but how? Had they been staring at her, not that she was much to look at- okay yes she was. She was the new girl after all and much like so many other new things, she was a mystery. A question that hadn't been answered yet. "Oh.. hi." Noa mumbled quietly, shoving a strand of hair behind her ear and forcing her gaze up. "I'm Noa." Her voice was so quiet and fragile, almost as though she was a china doll- no Asian joke intended.
