Fought - Page 2 Empty

Kayla wrinkled her nose as she worked. The shoulder too. With a wordless sigh, she started to unbutton Kaya's shirt, peeling away the wet and bloody fabric to get a better look at the cut across her shoulder. "She'll probably be okay, but she should stay here overnight." Healing might take another few days or weeks, but that depended on a better nurse's verdict. For now, that was all she could give. She grit her teeth. "If you wanna stay with her, you can take one of the cots." If not, it shouldn't have mattered to her, but something about the idea of this girl staying in this place all alone made her sick to her stomach.

Her sparse explanation only piled onto her suspicion. You didn't get these kinds of cuts from an accident, not unless her gift had rebounded or some other fluke mishap. She'd been attacked and left to bleed out on the soccer field. That much felt clear to her now. A fire started up in her gut, and the sudden storm of anger showed as she ripped a strip of bandage off the roll with a shower of sparks. It was almost hypocritical. Kayla had been in more fights than she could count, so why would she care? As far as she knew, she might've provoked it. But the girl lying silently across the bed, covered in blood, didn't strike her as the type to go and pick fights. There was a line, in her mind, between a fight and attacking someone weaker just because you could.

People like that made her sick.

"What's your name?" she asked the girl behind her, not looking back. Kayla's hands were stained with blood. She'd met her before, but if she'd ever mentioned her name, she'd already forgotten it after everything that'd happened on the rooftop. "And what's hers?"

Kaya cooperated as best she could with Kayla's work, and at the mention of a cot, she seemed to calm. Sleep sounded amazing. Her skin felt sleek with a layer of cold, and laying in a warm bed sounded like the best thing in the world. In all her years in the arctic circle, she had never been that cold before. Of course, this tranquility went with a sudden spark, which caused her muscles to tense against their fatigue. She'd gotten acquainted with this nurse's power enough.

As her skin warmed to the loss of the wet clothing, the cold steel against Kaya's leg entered her consciousness. She breathed nervously. That wouldn't be a cool find. It was hidden in her sock, if hidden meant a clear bulge. It wasn't exactly a pocket knife, after all. She put her legs together, trying casually to hide it between them. That wouldn't exactly help her innocence case, possessing a weapon like that. Even if she never used it.

Detached from the shock of the situation and devoid of interrogation, Kaya murmured her name instead of Larissa. It sounded foreign, distant from herself, and her head ached to accommodate the words. "My name is Kaya."

"I'll stay with her." Larissa wasn't just about to leave her friend all by herself, especially after what just happened. With those wounds, the summer felt like she needed to stay just to make sure that nothing went wrong even if there wasn't much chance of that happening. Besides, she wouldn't want to stay in this place by herself if she were the injured one. She should probably let Daniel know she wouldn't be back tonight.

After walking around the girls, Larissa carefully took a seat on a nearby cot, watching them carefully as Kayla worked. She really had no idea as to what she could do to help, so she simply stayed out of the way until Kayla spoke up again asking the both about their names. That was right. None of them knew each other save for Kaya and Larissa. It was a bit of a surprise when Kaya finally spoke up to say her name and it left a small smile on Larissa's face. "I'm Larissa." she said before pausing for a moment. "You are..?" she felt awkward asking but she wanted to know.

So she'd finally learned how to talk, huh? Kayla paused, grimacing, but nodded after a moment and kept working. Kaya. If they were all being honest here, it didn't matter and she didn't care what their names were, but the important thing was that she'd decided to speak. "Kaya," she repeated, turning the word over in her mouth. Kaya, Kaya, Kaya. It was too similar to her own name for her to lie and give some empty compliment, but she chalked down a mental note and stored both their names away in the back of her mind anyways. Kaya. Larissa. Even if it was just a needless detail, she felt compelled to make an effort to remember.

Her own name didn't matter either, but since she'd asked, she didn't have any choice but to answer. "My name's Kayla," she muttered back, a flicker of electricity flitting along her shoulders. "We met, I think." That was half true, at least. There'd been so many people on that fucking rooftop that all their faces blended together in her mind, but she still remembered her, at least. Larissa. Fitting, she guessed.

She paused again, frowning at the drenched and bloody fabric plastered to the girl's skin. Larissa was soaked too, practically forming a puddle at her feet. "There's a bin of spare clothes to change into over there," she finally said, glancing up at what looked like a closet on the far end of the room. It'd be a plastic container hidden under a rack of hanging smocks and hospital gowns. Unless Larissa wanted to run back out to their dorm and grab a few spare changes of clothes for the both of them, picking out some musty ugly sweater would still be better than them both sitting around overnight soaked to the bone. Kayla finally pulled away, holding her bloodstained hands out in front of her. It wasn't the best wrapping job, but it'd keep her pieced together for the night. Right now, she just needed water and rest. "I can't do much else, so if you two want to change..."

Kaya nodded. She was conscious that she lay there with only a bra, and the chills of a long time in the rain and loss of blood didn't help the creeping numbness she felt. She felt pale, if that was a feeling, and when she stood up slowly, she staggered a bit, overcome by a dropping lightheadedness. She was able to step on her own, however, rigid in her arms, but her fingers flicked. Her legs stayed close to each other, taking turns stepping in a way to guard the knife, until she was safe behind the door of the closet she opened. She put down her skirt, peeling off her socks and placing all these articles around the knife, cradling it, trying her best to make it look inconspicuous. All the while, the spirits of seals and foxes danced around her head in a whistling whir, given softspoken interrogations, singing why them not her, why them not her. She balanced on one foot at a time and removed her underwear, placing it in the pile and gripping the door. She rapidly throwing a hospital gown over her head, and like a barrier from herself, the sounds of past hunts washed off her, and she felt dry for the first time in hours. It was nice; though the gown felt as thin as the bandages that kept her scars hidden.

She stepped out, still a little wobbly, smiling sheepishly, her mouth doll-like in its stitched-over closedness.

Larissa watched as Kaya got up out of the cot and uncertainly made her way to the closet. She stood up from her own cot quickly, ready to reach out and help the girl but stopped when she saw Kaya walking on her own. "L-Let me know if you need any help!" she called as she watched her friend carefully. She did lose a lot of blood, after all. She didn't need to push herself like this. Larissa waited, though, and was relieved when Kaya stepped out in a hospital gown. At least she could do that. This girl was awesome. Even after suffering from all of those injuries, she could still get up and do her own thing. Larissa couldn't believe it.

"Is everything okay? Do you need help getting back?" Larissa wanted to help if she could. She'd be a horrible friend if she didn't. Without waiting for an answer, the summer skipped back around Kayla and the first cot towards Kaya, stopping carefully by her side, second-guessing her actions. Originally she was going to get Kaya to use her as a crutch but decided to respect the girl's personal space and actually wait for her to voice her opinion before continuing. Larissa looked at her timidly, hoping that she would accept her help.
