People were chatting and laughing with their friends, occasionally taking a bite of their sandwich or placing a fry in their mouth. They leaned over textbooks, notebooks, each other's food, or cell phones, allowing the material world to pull them in to something that distracted them from their miserable existence. It was like Remington had never left regular public high school. This school might have magic, sure, but he could see there was no other obvious difference.
Parked at a booth in a back corner of the cafeteria, Remi studied the goings-on as he slowly ate his way through a tray of French fries. He had no ketchup, preferring them plain, the salt leaving a bitter taste in his mouth. Or was that just how he was feeling? It had been well over a month since he had come to this place, expecting a fresh start, something different, somewhere he could be himself without having to face his parents, but instead, it wasn't any different. He just lived in a dorm room with a few others he never communicated with. With a heavy sigh, the boy slouched further in his seat, hunched over the fries. Something had to change soon, right?
