Catching a Break [Closed for Ice]

Lucas had been bugged by a dragonfly all day. Another one of his hallucinations had filled his head all day without end, zipping around his head. It was annoying the living hell out of him, and when anyone asked why he was clasping his head in his hands, he just looked at them and redirected the vision to them. The result of the pesky dragonfly was a very disgruntled young man with an intense headache. He collapsed in the courtyard, a huff of breath escaping the initiate's mouth. He wasn't so sure about Beata. He felt painfully mediocre among the other initiates, who had some pretty diverse and interesting powers. The tall boy stretched his legs out in the grass. It wasn't late: It was just about six in the evening. The sun was just below the skyline and sent a shower of colors across the sky, making for a gorgeous display. He looked to his left. A pink and orange colored lizard was lazily creeping down his arm, probably a product of his sky-gazing. He chuckled a bit, pretending to pet it. He saw someone start walking towards him. "Hello!" he called, a shy smile tracing his mouth.

Well, it had certainly been an interesting week, well, month for that matter. Everything seemed to be going on with his sister, Pepper, and in worrying about her, he'd gotten behind on school work. Walking through the courtyard, the tall blonde carried a notebook with a few pieces of paper neatly tucked in it for him to study, and a pencil. His blue bird friend flew around overhead, whistling a pretty tune. On top of being extremely busy with school work, he hadn't had the time to hang out with his woodland friends, in which the blue bird whom he called Blue, missed him the most. "I know, I know, I'm sorry. But I need to get good grades so I can get a scholarship," he chuckled lightly. The bird chirped back a few notes, to which a normal person would seem like meaningless noise, but to Louis, it was a sentence. "Of course you don't understand, you're a bird," he laughed, sitting down on a bench.

Blue flew down and sat on the Summer's shoulder, looking down at the paper and chirping some more, but before Louis could reply, a voice startled him. The small bird flew away, most likely to a nearby tree, and Louis turned his head to see a student on a patch of grass, a few feet away from him, probably enjoying the weather. "Hello, enjoying the comfy grass I see?" he said softly. When it came to animals, Louis loved to talk and carry on conversations, but unfortunately wasn't the best at speaking with humans.

As the older boy started talking to him, the first thing Lucas noticed was his hair. He wasn't quite sure why, but it attracted his eye first. His eyes moved around the space between the two, watching the kaleidoscope of a lizard crawl around. Lucas looked back up at the elder, scratching the back of his neck. "Yeah, it's nice out here. My gift's been giving me a pretty big run for my money all day. It's nice to have some peace, at least for a little bit." He stuck out a pale hand. "I'm Luke Cartmann. You?"

Louis shook the boy's hand, looking down at him. "Louis Ashina," he replied with a smile. He didn't recognize the student, and wondered if he was new. "So are you new around here?" The way that this kid talked about his power made Louis assume he was fairly new, but just in case, he might as well ask.

Luke shrugged a bit. "Yeah, this is my first week," he explained, "Everyone's so kind here, I'm having trouble adjusting to the positive attention... I didn't really have many friends growing up. My gift made everyone think I was insane. I can make hallucinations, but... Well, so far they're forced on me the most." The brunet watched his lizard creation roam up the other boy's leg. "Hey, leave him alone!" Luke shouted playfully, his eyes flickering up to Louis. As soon as he made eye contact, he felt a familiar twinge, and he pointed at the sunset colored lizard. "C-can you see it? I think I just got you to see it... I-I'm not sure. It doesn't get much better than lizards and sentient bonsai trees right now, but I'm working on it." He smiled brightly. It was about time he got someone else to see it voluntarily. He curled his fingers around the sleeves of his hoodie and watched the critter crawl around.

Louis watched at a lizard crawled up his leg and listened to the boy, who seemed pretty comfortable about sharing his past, even though they just met. Usually, people would scream of freak out when they spotted any reptiles, but to Louis, is was just another one of Mother Nature's creations. A hallucination? Well, then technically it was this kid's creation.

No wonder it didn't feel normal and has a sort of airy feeling to its scales. Looking from the reptile who'd scurried off his leg and back to the boy, he kept a soft smile on his face. "Yeah, I saw it. That's a pretty cool power you got there," he added and set his notebook down next to him on the bench. Giving a short, high pitched whistle, the blue bird that'd flown away came back and sat on his shoulder, giving a few nervous chirps. "It's okay, he's a friend," the  Summer said, stroking the bird's head with a finger. "Luke, this is Blue. Blue, this is Luke," he introduced the two of them, not caring if he looked crazy for talking with a bird. "My gift is animal communication," he added, looking to Blue.

Lucas looked at the bird in wonder. "Hello..!" he said quietly, sending a weak little wave of greeting to Blue. It was strange, watching the older boy talk to a bird like an old friend. He stared in amazement at the two, a faint smile curling at one corner of his mouth. "You can talk to him... like he's a person? And he understands you? That's pretty fantastic!" He tilted his head a bit, pursing his lips. He wondered what the bird would say if he could talk out loud. He looked a bit skittish when he flew in. Was he scaring him?

Louis gave a chuckle at the boy's comment. "Yeah, I have to admit, it can be pretty cool, unless he's angry, then I get my ear chirped off," he added, and the bird started angrily making noises and little gestures that told Louis and anyone else that he didn’t appreciate what the blonde said. Louis tapped the bird lightly on the beak in hopes of telling him that he meant no harm by his little comment. "Oddly enough, some animals aren't able to speak like others, I guess it’s just how their brains work," he added, looking to the lizard that was scurrying around luke. "So, you said your power was hallucinations?" he asked, hoping to change the conversation from being about his power, which in the end wasn’t that exciting.

Lucas shrugged a little, sucking in a breath. "Yeah, hallucinations. As of right now, my gift isn't anything special," he said, "Everyone here seems so talented already... I just hope I get better. My mom has a pretty similar gift, she said that, if I keep practicing, I'll be able to make dreamscapes in other people's eyes and confuse them." The boy rubbed his eyes tiredly, checking his phone. He rolled his eyes at himself, it wasn't like he'd have any notifications... He hadn't even signed up for Esper yet. He looked back up at Louis quickly. "What house are you in? I should be getting assigned soon."

Louis listened to Luke. He seemed like a pretty nice and average kid, unlike most people that attended Beata. Even he wasn't "normal," being a bit more privileged than most. Then again, with 12 brothers and a sister, he couldn't blame his parents for having jobs that paid well. "Don't worry, I bet your gift is pretty cool, and don't worry about talented people, you're new, so no one will judge," he chuckled with a smile, hoping what he said would be true. Of course there were students who enjoyed judging, like Jake's friend Maria, but he hoped that this kid would find good people to become friends with. "I'm in Spring, it's pretty nice."
