Round 1: Keirsta Chree vs. Grace Crowe

The sun bore down warmly on the fields below, cooking the clay court to a lovely warmth. Two girls faced off in the preliminary round of the tennis tournament. Well, tournament in the loosest sense of the word. On one side stood Grace Crowe, looking over the net at her opponent with veritable regret in her eyes. With a desire to try to be more 'out there', she had signed up for this tennis tournament, despite one single, simple truth: she couldn't play tennis. Oh sure, she'd played it before... once. That was four years ago though, and she had done just about no athletics of any kind since then. Now she got to stand there with a tennis racket in one hand and a ball in the other, slightly shaking from nerves. She had finally shed the jacket she always wore, but now she wished she had brought it. People were watching. Not a lot of people, but there was more than zero. Why did people have to come here specifically when she was playing?

Her opponent looked older, and very pretty. She felt rather inadequate by comparison. What was her power? They were all allowed to use their powers, but Grace's wouldn't really help, especially in the daytime. Maybe her opponent's would be equally worthless. Maybe... Softly sighing, she steadied her hand as best she could and tossed the ball into the air, waiting for it to start its descending arc before rearing her arm back and swinging at the ball. The satisfying 'thwack' of the ball sounded as Grace thankfully sent the ball over the next and onto her opponent's side of the field.

That sound only could tell Keirsta one thing,

The game had begun.

A grin was quick to show up on her face as her nature to compete quickly sparked up, and even though she had a tennis racket in her hand, she planned to use her gift. As much as it would drain her from using it in the day, she could use it to the point where if she didn't hit it with the racket hard enough, she could at least somewhat give the ball a little bit of a boost using her power as sort of a second tennis racket.

Once the ball was over on her side of the court, Keirsta swung at the ball with a rather hard force. Hearing yet another 'thwack,' she watched as the ball maneuvered towards the net.

With full-on power, Keirsta watched the ball go over the side of the net. A bit of a smile was on her face, and it was already turning out to be an enjoyable experience. She'd taken a few quick lessons before the tournament, so the rules were still rather fresh in her mind.

The ball shot hard off her opponent's racket like a rocket, causing Grace to squeak in surprise and rush over to try and receive the returned serve.

Without much of her name in her movements, Grace somehow was able to get to the ball before it blew past her, and even more miraculously was able to put racket on ball. It was a decent shot too, with enough power to get over the net without touching it. Her momentum nearly carried her off the court, and only by putting on the brakes was she able to stop herself, though this caused her to nearly fall over backwards instead. She quickly turned back, the ball already nearing her opponent.

A bit of a chuckle came from Keirsta as she tried her best to hit the ball back towards her opponent.

Well, she got it back, to say the least. The ball bounced off of her racket, but it had nearly stopped at the net... That was when she had used her gift to bounce the ball a little bit harder in mid-air. It didn't hit the net or the ground, and so technically it was a legal move.

It was subtle enough to where Grace didn't notice it. She was too preoccupied trying to get to the ball to receive it. Her lack of exercise was evident, as she was already laboring to return each volley across the court.

Once more she was able to reach the ball, and it took almost the same arc over the net, though this time she was able to steady herself better. She was more prepared to return the next volley.

Was she late?

A girl with a sling and a ratty baseball cap limped up to that old tennis court, wondering if she should've even bothered. Tennis. What a stupid sport. It was embarrassing to even be here.

Not that it was the first time. She'd been here plenty of nights before, way up past curfew, just staring up past the stars... but that was because apparently only four people in the whole damn school cared about tennis enough to pick up a racket. The court looked even more pathetic and forgotten in the daylight, even after the pains they must have went through to make it look nice for their "tournament."

But here she was, and there was Grace. Kayla stopped at the overgrown fence, eyes following the little green ball bouncing back and forth between them. The other girl was using some kind of gift, like faint silver light, to keep the ball afloat with all her bad returns... Lightning crackled in her palm. Would it be cheating to shock her with that metal racket and help Grace out a bit? Probably.

The ball kept going over the fence, and that was a good thing. Even if it would be awhile.

Well, it wasn't much of a trouble, she whammed the ball over the fence rather easily.

It seemed like an exercise in futility, but so far Grace had successfully been able to return each serve, despite all evidence to the contrary. Now it was time to do it again.

OoC: Did you know that tennis is an aphrodisiac in Macronesia? -- This will never end. And this would just be 15-Love.

A new entrant to the watchers area caught Grace's eye, and it distracted her enough for her to nearly miss her shot. The ball slapped the half point between the racket's webbing and its more metallic casing, but it somehow got over the net, just barely, bouncing weakly towards her opponent. That gave the young girl a few precious moments to see fully who had arrived. Kayla! What in the world was she doing here? Maybe she liked tennis. Why the fact that a girl she had met on her first day and hadn't seen in the last couple of weeks would cause her to become majorly nervous was not readily apparent to her, nor was the fact that she felt like she had to perform. How was she supposed to do that? She was only still in it by God's great miracle.
